Preparing for Your Initial Consultation

It is important to make the most of your time when you meet with your attorney. Prior to your appointment make a list of questions that you want to remember to ask. Remember that all communications with your attorney are confidential and privileged. It is always important to be truthful and honest with your attorney as an attorney cannot fully assess your situation without all relevant information.

Other items which will be helpful to bring with you to your consultation:

  Completed Client Intake Form
  List of questions
  Copies of any legal documents (prenuptial agreements, documents relating to pending or previous cases - injunctions, dependency, prior dissolution)
  Law enforcement reports (if applicable) relating to either party
  Chronology (time line) of important marriage/relationship events
  Employment information for both you and the opposing party
  Social security number, driver's license number, address for opposing party
  Child(ren)'s name, date of birth, place of birth and social security number
  Last 3 years of income tax returns
  Last 3 months of paystubs (if employed)
  Asset information (investments, savings, stocks, retirement, motor vehicles etc.)
  Debt information (including mortgage) - who is owed and how much
  Current fair market value of real estate
  Mental health history of either party
  Criminal history of either party
  History of substance abuse by either party
